DIVISIONS OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM🫁

The respiratory system is divided into two main functional zones:

1. CONDUCTING ZONE (The Airway Passage)
This part transports air to and from the lungs but does not participate in gas exchange. It also filters, warms, and humidifies incoming air, ensuring it is clean and at an optimal temperature before reaching the delicate lung tissues.

Structures & Functions

Nose 👃 – The primary entry point for air, lined with hairs and mucus to trap dust and microbes.

Pharynx 🗣️ – A shared passage for air and food that directs air toward the respiratory tract.

Larynx 🎤 – Also known as the voice box, it prevents food from entering the windpipe using the epiglottis and helps produce sound.

Trachea 🚇 – Also called the windpipe, this tube carries air from the larynx to the bronchi and is lined with mucus and cilia to remove debris.

Bronchi 🌿 – Two primary branches that direct air into each lung, further dividing into smaller bronchioles.

Bronchioles 🌬️ – The smallest airways before the respiratory zone, controlling airflow resistance.

2. RESPIRATORY ZONE 🌬️ (The Gas Exchange Hub)

This part is responsible for oxygen (O₂) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) exchange between air and blood. The thin walls of the alveoli allow gases to diffuse efficiently.

Structures & Functions

Respiratory Bronchioles – The transition point between the conducting and respiratory zones, containing small air sacs.

Alveolar Ducts – Tiny passageways that lead directly into clusters of alveoli.

Alveoli (Tiny Air Sacs) – The site of gas exchange, where oxygen diffuses into the blood and carbon dioxide is released from the blood into the lungs for exhalation.
