    • Rasāyana is one of the eight branches (Aṣṭāṅga) of Ayurveda.

    • The term Rasāyana is derived from:

      • Rasa = essence/nutrient fluid

      • Ayana = path or movement
        → Meaning: That which facilitates the flow and enrichment of rasa dhātu in the body.

    • It is a specialized therapy to enhance longevity, intelligence, immunity, and vitality.

    Sanskrit Śloka (Caraka Saṃhitā, Cikitsāsthāna 1/1):
    जीर्णमजीर्णमालोक्य यथासात्म्यं च भोजनम्।
    रसायनानि भुञ्जीत जीवन्ति शरदः शतम्॥


    MEANING AND SCOPE OF RASĀYANA KARMA

    • Rasāyana Karma refers to the action or effects of Rasāyana drugs and therapies on the body.

    • These actions are mainly rejuvenative, restorative, and promotive of overall health.

    • Rasāyana therapy works at the level of cellular nutrition, metabolism, and immunity.


    AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF RASĀYANA KARMA

    • Ayurvedic goal of Rasāyana:

      • Deerghāyuḥ (longevity)

      • Smṛti and Medhā (memory and intellect enhancement)

      • Arogya (disease-free state)

      • Vākpāṭutva (speech clarity)

      • Varṇa (glowing complexion)

      • Ojas (vital essence)

    Sanskrit Śloka (Caraka Saṃhitā, Cikitsāsthāna 1/7):
    दीर्घमायुः स्मृतिं मेधामारोग्यं तरुणं वयः।
    प्रभावर्णस्वरौदार्यं देहेन्द्रियबलं परम्॥

    TYPES OF RASĀYANA

    1. KUTI PRĀVEŚIKA RASĀYANA

      • Conducted in a special, well-constructed, isolated cottage.

      • Ideal for elderly or diseased individuals for complete rejuvenation.

      • Requires strict protocol and prolonged stay.

    2. VĀTĀTAPIKA RASĀYANA

      • Can be administered while the person is exposed to external environment.

      • More practical and suitable for common use.

      • Provides moderate Rasāyana effects.

    3. ĀJĀŚRIYA RASĀYANA

      • Lifestyle-based Rasāyana (ethical behavior, mental discipline).

      • Includes Satya, Ahimsā, Brahmacharya, cleanliness, etc. to maintain health.

      • It emphasizes mental and social well-being.

    Sanskrit Śloka (Caraka Saṃhitā, Cikitsāsthāna 1/4):
    सत्यं ब्रह्मचर्यं क्षमा प्रशान्तिरहिंसा प्रीतिर्विनयं दया च।
    दानं तपः शौचमहोदयं च आचार्यवृद्धोपहितं च यत्तत्॥
    एषोऽन्वितः स्यादजरा मरिष्टो जीवेद्वरं शरदः शुद्धसत्त्वः॥

    1. NAIMITTIKA RASĀYANA

      • Disease-specific Rasāyana used along with other therapies.

      • Example: Mandūkaparṇī for mental disorders, Pippalī Rasāyana in tuberculosis.


    MECHANISM OF ACTION OF RASĀYANA KARMA

    • Enhances quality of rasa dhātu, which leads to better quality of all subsequent dhātus.

    • Acts on Agni (digestive fire) and improves dhātu metabolism (dhātu agni dīpana).

    • Improves Srotas śuddhi (channel clearance) for better nutrient transport.

    • Enhances Ojas, leading to better immunity and vitality.


    EFFECT OF RASĀYANA ON DOṢA, DHĀTU, AND MALA

    • DOṢA: Brings doṣas into balance, especially vāta and pitta.

    • DHĀTU: Strengthens all seven dhātus by improving their quality and quantity.

    • MALA: Regulates mala production and elimination due to improved digestion and metabolism.

    1. Āmalakī (Emblica officinalis)

    2. Guḍūcī (Tinospora cordifolia)

      • Tikta, Kaṣāya rasa, Uṣṇa vīrya.

    3. Mandūkaparṇī (Centella asiatica)

      • Medhya Rasāyana, enhances brain function, used in mental health.

    4. Aśvagandhā (Withania somnifera)

    5. Harītakī (Terminalia chebula)
