UPADHATU DUSHTI (VITIATION OF SECONDARY TISSUES)

• Upadhatus are secondary tissues derived from Dhatus and perform important physiological roles.
• Their vitiation leads to specific signs and symptoms.

  
  

  1. STANYA DUSHTI (VITIATION OF BREAST MILK)

  • Caused by: Agnimandya, Doshakopa in lactating mothers, improper diet.

  • Symptoms in child:

    • Loose motions, colic pain, vomiting, skin eruptions.

    • Respiratory infections.

  • Symptoms in mother:

    • Discoloration of milk, foul odor, altered consistency.

  2. RAKTAVAHINI DUSHTI (DUSHTI OF BLOOD-CONDUCTING CHANNELS)

  • May be considered an Upadhatu of Rasa.

  3. ARTAVA DUSHTI (VITIATION OF MENSTRUAL FLUID)

  • Causes: Vata, Pitta, Kapha vitiation; improper diet and lifestyle.

  • Symptoms:

    • Irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, menorrhagia.

    • Foul-smelling, discolored menstrual flow.

    • Associated pain, burning sensation, or cramps.

  • Lasika is a part of Rasa.

  • Symptoms:

    • Edema, sluggish wound healing.

  MALA DUSHTI (VITIATION OF EXCRETORY PRODUCTS)

  Mala refers to the waste products of the body – Purisha (feces), Mutra (urine), and Sveda (sweat). Their dushti leads to multiple systemic issues.

  1. PURISHA DUSHTI (FECES VITIATION)

  • Types of changes:

    • Hard stools (Vibandha/constipation) – Vata dushti.

    • Loose stools, foul-smelling (Atisara) – Pitta dushti.

    • Mucous-laden, sticky stools – Kapha dushti.

  • Relevant Shloka:
    "मलानामपि दोषैव विशेषेण विवर्धते।
    ते चेद् दुश्चिकित्स्याः स्युर्विशेषेण हि मानवाः॥"

  2. MUTRA DUSHTI (URINE VITIATION)

  • Features:

    • Increased frequency (Mutrakrichchhra), burning micturition (Pitta), turbid or thick urine (Kapha), reduced flow or retention (Vata).

    • Changes in color, odor, quantity.

  • Clinical relevance: Urinary tract infections, diabetes mellitus (Prameha), kidney disorders.

  3. SVEDA DUSHTI (SWEAT VITIATION)

  • Symptoms:

    • Foul-smelling sweat (Pitta).

    • Excessive sweating (Abnormal Svedana).

    • Absence of sweating (Asvedana) – Vata dushti.

    • Sticky, heavy sweating – Kapha dushti.

  • Clinical correlation: Hyperhidrosis, anhidrosis, bromhidrosis.

  INDRIYA DUSHTI (VITIATION OF SENSORY ORGANS)

  Indriyas are the tools for perception. Their dushti results in impaired sensory functioning.

  1. CHAKSHUR INDRIYA DUSHTI (EYE/ VISION)

  • Symptoms:

    • Blurred vision, dry eyes, redness, itching.

    • Loss of sight, photophobia.

    • Pitta dushti causes burning; Vata causes dryness; Kapha causes heaviness and discharge.

  2. SHRAVANA INDRIYA DUSHTI (HEARING)

  • Features:

    • Tinnitus (ringing in ears), hearing loss.

    • Ear discharge, pain, itching.

    • Vata dominance: Sound without cause; Pitta: Infections; Kapha: Blockage.

  3. GHRANA INDRIYA DUSHTI (SMELL)

  • Features:

    • Anosmia (loss of smell), hyperosmia, offensive smell perception.

    • Nasal discharge, congestion.

  4. RASANA INDRIYA DUSHTI (TASTE)

  • Symptoms:

    • Loss of taste (Arasa), altered taste sensations.

    • Tongue coating, inflammation, burning.

  5. SPARSHANA INDRIYA DUSHTI (TOUCH)

  • Features:

    • Numbness, hypersensitivity, itching.

    • Loss of tactile sensation.

    • Correlates with neuropathies and skin disorders.

  Mind (Manas) when vitiated leads to psychological and psychosomatic disorders.

  1. CAUSES OF MANAS DUSHTI

  • Asatmya Indriyartha Samyoga (Improper contact with sense objects).

  • Prajnaparadha (Intellectual error).

  • Parinama (Effect of time).

  2. SYMPTOMS OF MANAS DUSHTI

  • Vata-related: Fear, anxiety, insomnia, indecisiveness.

  • Pitta-related: Anger, irritability, jealousy, agitation.

  • Kapha-related: Depression, lethargy, delusions.

  3. MAJOR MENTAL DISORDERS (AS PER AYURVEDA)

  • Unmada – Insanity.

  • Apasmara – Epilepsy.

  • Chittodvega – Anxiety disorders.

  • Vishada – Depression.
